cougar tracks
Tracks in both of the photos below were made by a male that weighed about 160 pounds. I was about 20 feet from a large willow when this cougar leaped from this hiding place and ran away.
This is where he’d been resting. Prints are approximately the size of the back of an average man's hand when making a fist.
The upper left hand print is a good example of a rear foot print. Note the pad is narrow at the front, when compared with a front paw.

He touched down on a muddy road leaving this print. He almost cleared the entire road (about 15 feet wide)
Note the distinct pad at the top of this photo and the 4 toes below. This is a left front foot - slightly larger than rear feet and the pad is wider at the front edge as well.
I have not photographed prints made with claws extended. I rarely see them. Claws are not often utilized unless climbing steep grades and the like. Claw marks of cougar are much finer than the large blunt marks left by the claws of large dogs.
